Fotografi da rally – Intervista a Vincent Thuillier

Per la 9° uscita della serie “fotografi da rally ” abbiamo l’onore di presentarvi due giovani fratelli gemelli francesi Vincent e Romain Thuillier .

When you start du shoot ? Why ?
Quando hai iniziato a scattare? Perchè ?

“I was used to visit several rallies with Romain, my twin’s brother (Rally Deutschland is near to the place where we lived, first time in 2004). He started photography few years before me, and we noticed that it wasn’t easy because he always wanted to find some photogenic places, whereas I was looking for spectacular spots.
Beginning of 2011, I decided to buy a Nikon D7000 with a polyvalent Lense 18-200mm in order to try. The very first time I used it was at Day 1 in IRC Ypres Rally 2011 : I put it out of its box, and then directly tooked pictures in service park, with manual settings. That was the starting point of “Eyes of Rally” !
Since one year, we have joined the “Inside Motorsport” team, which is a free electronic magazine about motorsport. This is a truly different way to enjoy our passion.”

“Ero solito andare a vedere diversi rally con Romain, il mio fratello gemello (il Rally Deutschland si trova vicino al luogo dove abbiamo vissuto, prima volta nel 2004). Ha iniziato a scattare pochi anni prima di me e abbiamo notato che non è stato facile perché metterci d’accordo perchè lui voleva sempre trovare posti “fotogenici” , mentre io ero alla ricerca di luoghi spettacolari.
All’inizio del 2011, ho deciso di acquistare una Nikon D7000 con una lente polivalente 18-200mm per provare. La prima volta che l’ho usata era al giorno 1 nell’ IRC Ypres Rally 2011: l’ho tirata fuori dalla sua scatola, ed ho iniziato a scattare direttamente in parco assistenza, con impostazioni manuali. Questo è stato il punto di partenza di “Eyes of Rally”!
Da un anno, siamo entrati del team di “Motorsport Inside”, che è una rivista elettronica gratuita sul motorsport. Questo è un modo davvero diverso di vivere la nostra passione “

Who has teach you how to do good images ?
Chi ti ha insegnato a realizzare buone immagini ?

“Romain was the only one who explained to me. He has helped me to save lot of time, trying to all learn by myself. As Twin’s brother, Romain and I have a special relationship. We share lot of common interests, same point of view. We always support ourselves, with a fair compromise between competition and mutual help. It’s exactly the same with photography.”

“Romain è l’unico che mi ha spiegato. Lui mi ha aiutato a risparmiare molto tempo, cercando di imparare tutti da solo. Come trà gemelli con Romain e ho un rapporto speciale. Condividiamo molti interessi comuni, stesso punto di vista. Ci sosteniamo sempre a vicenda, con un giusto compromesso tra concorrenza e di aiuto reciproco; è esattamente la stessa cosa con la fotografia. “

Do you think that it could be your future job ?
Pensi che potrebbe essere il tuo lavoro futuro??

“For now, I’m not considering myself as professional. Taking pictures for pleasure is really easier than what professionals have to do. Since we started, it has always be a question of passion, just to live in a different way the sport that we love. We don’t sold our pictures (even for free!), don’t earn money.”

“Per ora, non sto considerando me stesso come professionista. Fotografare per piacere è davvero più facile di quello che i professionisti hanno a che fare. Da quando abbiamo iniziato è sempre una questione di passione, solo per vivere in modo diverso lo sport che noi amiamo. Non vendiamo le nostre foto (sempre gratis), non guadagnamo soldi. “

What’s the difference in the images between you and your brother Romain ?
Quali sono le differenze nelle immagini tra te e tuo fratello Romain ?

“For sure, we share lots of things. But, I guess there’s the same difference between two different other photographers. It’s always a personal point of view.”

“Di sicuro, condividiamo un sacco di cose. Tuttavia, credo che ci sia la stessa differenza tra due diversi fotografi. E ‘sempre un punto di vista personale.”

What’s your target when you are shooting ? What do you want transmit in your pictures ?
Qual’è il tuo obiettivo quando scatti ? Cosa vuoi trasmettere nelle tue immagini?

“Mainly, I always try to get varied portfolio of every round I visit. Someone who didn’t assist to the rally should feel the entire atmosphere, the vibes of what happened.”

“Soprattutto, cerco sempre di ottenere un portafoglio vario per ogni round che visito. Chi non ha potuto assistere al rally dovrebbe sentire l’intera atmosfera, le vibrazioni di quello che è successo.”

Do you prefer static or panning photos ? Why ?
Preferisci foto statiche o in panning ? Perchè ?

“I have no preference. Best is to be able to take lot of different pictures, different angle, different setting at every places where you stay. You have to do both of them !”

“Non ho nessuna preferenza. Il meglio è essere in grado di prendere molte immagini diverse, diversa angolazione, diversa impostazione in tutti i luoghi dove stai. Devi fare tutti e due!”

Who is the best rally photographer ever ?
Chi è il miglior fotografo di sempre ?

“That a difficult question. I won’t tell you who is the best, but only who I admire !
First of all is François Flamand. There’s always something emotional, or dramatic, in his work.
Inspiration is coming when having a look at the work of lots of motorsport photographers.”

“E ‘una domanda difficile. Io non vi dirò chi è il migliore, ma solo chi ammiro!
Prima di tutti c’è François Flamand. C’è sempre qualcosa di emotivo, o drammatico, nelle sue opere.
L’ispirazione è venuta quando guardavo il lavoro di molti fotografi del motorsport “.

What’s your equipment ?
Qual’è il tuo equipaggiamento ?

“I use Nikon equipment : D800 with a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 and the D300s with a Sigma 70-200mm f.2.8. I recently bought a Nikon 20mm f2.8 for wider angle, and a Flash Nikon SB910.”

“Utilizzo un’equipaggiamento Nikon : D800 con un sigma 24-70 F2.8 e una D300S con un sigma 70-200 f 2.8 . Recentemete ho acquistato un Nikon 20 mm f 2.8 come grandangolo e un Flash Nikon SB910. “

What do you think about post production in the rally photos ?
Cosa pensi della post-produzione nelle foto di rally ?

“For me, post-production is different than modifying a picture. It shouldn’t change the original message, (or information). Picture should be good enough before post-production. It can’t help you to turn a bad picture into a masterpiece!
It’s always difficult to find the good balance in post-production, because it could easily become too much, not realistic. I still try to find the right way…”

“Per me, la post-produzione è diversa rispetto alla modifica di un’immagine. Essa non deve cambiare il messaggio originale, (o l’informazione). l’immagine dovrebbe essere abbastanza buona prima della post-produzione. Essa non può aiutare a trasformare una brutta foto in un capolavoro!
E ‘sempre difficile trovare il giusto equilibrio nella post-produzione, perché potrebbe facilmente diventare troppo, non realistica. Cerco ancora di trovare la strada giusta … “

You are very young, is this an advantage to find a place as photographer in WRC or not ?
Sei molto giovane, è questo un vantaggio nel trovare posto come fotografo nel Wrc o no ?

“Maybe you can say that it brings a fresh view, new ideas… But I think talent is not a question of age.”

“Forse si potrebbe dire che essa porta una nuova visione, nuove idee … Ma penso che il talento non è una questione di età.”

What is your favorite rally in the world and why ?
Qual’è il tuo rally preferito al mondo e perchè ?

“Unfortunately, I didn’t travel on every round of WRC and ERC. For now, the round I prefer is Greece, because it’s always spectacular, you can get close to the cars… There’s lots of crazy landscapes too ! Unfortunately, WRC won’t visit this famous round anymore…”

“Purtroppo, non ha viaggiato in ogni round del WRC e ERC. Per ora, l’evento che preferisco è la Grecia, perché è sempre spettacolare, ed è possibile avvicinarsi alle auto … Ci sono un sacco di paesaggi pazzeschi ! Purtroppo, il WRC non farà più tappa…”

Who is the more sociable rally driver ?
Chi è il pilota più socievole ?

“I’m not so familiar with driver and co-driver. I can just say that Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul are very nice guys (We interviewed Nicolas for Inside Motorsport Magazine number 3).”

“Non sono così familiare con piloti e co-piloti. Posso solo dire che Thierry Neuville e Nicolas Gilsoul sono bravi ragazzi ( abbiamo intervistato Nicolas per Inside Motorsport Magazine numero 3).”

Who is the best driver to immortalize in action ?
Chi è il miglor pilota da immortalare nell’azione ?

“With Jari-Matti Latvala and Evgeny Novikov, you can expect a different road position from every else drivers !”

“Con Jari-Matti Latvala ed Evgeny Novikov, ti puoi aspettare una diversa posizione nella strada da tutti gli altri piloti !”

What do you think about WRC and ERC ? Are they better today or not ?
Cosa pensi del WRC e ERC ? Sono meglio oggi o no ?

“For sure, there’s still lot to do about promotion of this sport. Good TV coverage is the first step in order to attract sponsors and constructors. Then, fundamental roots of the sport should be respected.
ERC, thanks to Eurosport, is on the right way, even if it won’t be possible to get the same prestige as WRC.”

“Di sicuro, c’è ancora molto da fare per la promozione di questo sport. Buona copertura TV è il primo passo per attirare sponsor e costruttori. Poi, le radici fondamentali di questo sport dovrebbero essere rispettate.
ERC, grazie a Eurosport, è sulla strada giusta, anche se non sarà possibile ottenere lo stesso prestigio come il WRC “.

What do you think about italian rallies ans Italian fans ?
Cosa pensi dei rally italiani e dei loro tifosi ?

“I can’t wait to visit an Italian rally in order to answer you”
