INGLESE

What are your conclusions from this year’s championship?

MV: “I suppose I have mixed conclusions really. On the one hand I am happy to win the Rookie of the Year title, because this was our objective. On the other hand I think we made too many mistakes as well. I know that this is all part of the learning process but I am my own harshest critic – and I really believe that this is the way you need to be if you want to improve. One thing is sure: we have learned a huge amount. Knowing what we do now, we are a lot better equipped for next year.”

Which are the areas where you learned most?

MV: “Where do I start? I think we learned everything this year! Asphalt in particular was a real eye-opener for me: I had done virtually nothing on asphalt before, so this was a very useful experience. I also learned how to manage my pace and strategy over a long rally as a whole, rather than individual stages. And then I learned how to recce and make proper pace notes. Of course I am still a long way from mastering any of those things yet, but we made a good start this year and I think we are heading in the right direction.”

What were the highlights of the year for you?

MV: “The most positive thing is that we managed to show plenty of speed and win some stages. The speed is the most important thing as either you have it or you don’t: everything else you can learn. And of course, as a Finn, it was a real privilege and a special moment to compete on Rally Finland for the first time: especially when we were leading at the end of the first day. It’s an event that I’ve grown up with, so to be finally driving on it was the realisation of a dream. And it was nice also that I made my debut on Rally Finland exactly 40 years after my dad first drove there, in 1974.”

What are your plans for next year?

MV: “We will do the Fiesta trophy again: we have a long term-plan and this was always the intention. We’ve learned a lot about it, and there is a brand new car for next year, with a one-litre turbocharged engine that actually puts out more power than the 1.6-litre engine we have been driving this year. It’s pretty incredible what modern automotive technology can achieve. Having won the Rookie title this year, next year our aim is to challenge for the overall title, which carries the great prize of a drive in a Ford Fiesta R5 car for the 2016 season.”

And what are your plans for the rest of this year?

MV: “It’s quite exciting as part of my prize for winning the Rookie classification is that I get to take part in a shoot-out for a one-off drive in a Fiesta R5 next year. I’ll be up against a few other drivers, who have also done well in a Fiesta R2 throughout this year all over the world, and we will all have to do a series of driving tests and challenges at M-Sport in England to decide the winner. This takes place in December, so quite soon. Of course I will be trying my hardest and I am sure it will be a lot of fun.”

And what are the other important things from this year?

MV: “The really important thing is that I would like to thank all my sponsors and all the other people who have supported me so loyally and enthusiastically throughout the season. PAF in particular have even organised groups of guests to take out to the stages, and it has been so nice to see them there and then meet them properly during the rally. Without the support of my backers I know I wouldn’t be here, and I am always very aware of this fact and incredibly grateful to them. It just makes me even more determined to repay their support with some strong results. And of course I am also grateful to my co-driver Mikko and for the advice from my dad Ari and my brother Kim. It’s a family affair too, which is very nice to share.”

So what are the plans for the rest of the year?

MV: “I just want to drive ideally, but we also have to concentrate on putting the budget together for next year and meeting potential backers to secure funding. So for the time being I don’t have any rallies planned, but you can be sure that if the opportunity comes up, I will be straight in there!”
