Prodrive non gestirà più il team ufficiale MINI. Al suo posto il Team MINI Portugal, gestito da Motorsport Italia

Gli attriti tra BMW e Prodrive sembrano essere giunti al termine. Oggi la BMW ha divulgato un comunicato ufficiale in cui si legge che il team MINI ufficiale sarà quello di Araujo e Nobre gestito da Motorsport Italia che sembra abbia iniziato già il reclutamento di meccanici
e ingegneri esperti in vetture WRC. Il Team MINI Portugal è stato iscritto come team ufficiale nel campionato costruttori del WRC al posto del MINI WRC Team gestito dalla Prodrive, ma da quello che si legge in giro sembra che l’iscrizione sarà valida solo per l’omologazione della MINI WRC ( niente punti costruttori quindi ).

Perchè questa decisione? Probabilmente perchè alla Prodrive mancava il budget necessario per schierare il team in tutti e 13 i round del Campionato del Mondo Rally. Mentre la FIA, così come ha chiarito la Prodrive stessa, dovrà ancora decidere se il team MINI gestito dalla Prodrive continuerà ad essere iscritto nel campionato costruttori oppure correrà come un normale team privato. Prodrive continuerà comunque ad occuparsi dello sviluppo della MINI JCW WRC e del supporto clienti. Intanto su Internet c’è molto fermento tra i numerosi appassionati e fans del WRC.

BMW ha assicurato che MINI resterà nel WRC almeno fino al 2018 e che il campionato del Mondo Rally è molto importante per il loro brand. Dr KAy Selger, vice presidente della divisione business e brand management ha commentato: “Restiamo convinti che il rally è perfetto per il nostro brand. La situazione in cui MINI Motorsport si trova ora è che può e deve continuare a crescere nei rally. Con tre podi e solo sette eventi disputati nel WRC, la MINI JCW WRC ha già mostrato il suo potenziale. Sono sicuro che i nostri clienti continueranno a far emozionare i fans della MINI negli anni a venire. La FIA è interessata nella presenza a lungo termine del brand MINI nel WRC ed è stata impegnata a trovare una soluzione costruttiva. Gli siamo grati per questo e per averci compreso”.

Selger ha anche ringraziato Prodrive per tutti gli sforzi fatti fin’ora:

“Con il loro grande entusiasmo e duro lavoro Prodrive ha avuto un grande ruolo nel successo che abbiamo raggiunto con la MINI WRC nel Mondiale Rally. Vorrei ringraziare tutti quelli della Prodrive per gli sforzi fatti fin’ora e per quello che faranno nel supportare la MINI JCW WRC in futuro”.

Prodrive ha assicurato che Dani Sordo continuerà a correre nei restanti eventi del Campionato del Mondo Rally.

After Dani Sordo (ES) and Carlos del Barrio (ES) finished second on the return of the brand to the legendary Monte Carlo Rally, the direction has now been set for a long-term MINI presence in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC): On Thursday 2 February, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) accepted a two-car manufacturer entry by WRC Team MINI Portugal into the 2012 FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers. As a consequence MINI will complete the homologation for the MINI John Cooper Works WRC. The WRC Team MINI Portugal – consisting of Armindo Araújo (PT) and his co-driver Miguel Ramalho (PT), as well as Paulo Nobre (BR) and co-driver Edu Paula (BR) – will contest the remaining 12 events of the 2012 FIA World Rally Championship.

This long-term homologation ensures that the MINI John Cooper Works WRC can be used in the premier league of rallying, and other series in accordance with FIA regulations, up to and including 2018. The cooperation with Prodrive will be put on a new basis. Prodrive remains responsible for the construction and support of MINI John Cooper Works WRC customer vehicles, and will continue to work with the BMW Group on the further development of the car. The WRC Team, run by Prodrive, will from now on start as a works-supported private team.
