When you start to shoot?? Why??
Quando hai iniziato a scattare??Perchè??

“I started shooting on the 8th of December 2006, if I remember well. It was the first time that I saw a WRC car, and it was for the Monte-Carlo tests of Marcus Grönholm with the Ford Focus RS WRC in Ardèche, France. My mother had a Canon EOS 30D. I asked her if I could make a few pictures and I kept the camera during all the day. I remember that day like if it was yesterday. The atmosphere with the lights and the sound of the car at night was just fantastic. After that, I tried to find a camera at home, and found the old Canon FTb of my father, which was hidden somewhere in the attic. Of course, he didn’t know about it! I went to the photo shop in my hometown to get a film, and went to a rally with some friends. It was late March, and we had 15 cm of snow in the stage. That was great fun! I went back to the photo shop, gave the film, and a week later, I discovered the results. Well, it was not so bad! So I decided to continue.”

Who has teach you how to do good images??

“I haven’t had any professor to teach me how to make good pictures. Of course, a lot of people gave me some advises, and I’m very thankful to them all. But the best school is to learn with an analog camera. The Canon FTb of my father was built in the 1970s, so it was all manual. No autofocus of course, no automatic light measurement, so I had to learn by myself how everything works: The lens aperture, the shutter speed, the focus. I remember that, during a rally, I wanted to make pan shots of the cars. I did that for two or three films. I gave the films at the photo shop, and a week after, I came back to get the films. I think that, from the 60 pictures, only 4 or 5 were sharp. And that is the best school to learn, because you remember your mistakes.”

When have you realized that it could become your future job??

“I have to say that it went all very smoothly. Since I’ve been making rally pictures, I’ve always tried to get in the professional world. But I realized that it was completely becoming part of my job almost two years ago, when I began thinking about creating my own little business.”

Tell me about your carrier
Raccontaci della tua carriera

“Well, I have to say that my career may surprise some people. It’s a little bit atypical. I’ve got a French High School Diploma with advanced Science. So normally, I should be working in France, in a lab, or doing something with mathematics, which I quite liked during my school time. But then, my lovely sister started co-driving in regional rallies, and of course, I was proud of her and I went to see her. That’s where I started to like rallying. I finally decided to pursue my studies, but not in science anymore. So I’ve got a Bachelor of foreign languages, English and German. At the end of my Bachelor, I had to find an internship, either in Great-Britain or in Germany. Of course, I searched something in motor sport, and soon, I applied at McKlein Publishing. I came to Germany to make my internship, finished my studies and they offered me a job at the publishing. In the meantime, I was still going to rallies, and making pictures, still with an analog camera. During my internship, I was seeing Reinhard Klein everyday (with Colin McMaster and Bob McCaffrey, they created McKlein in 1997). So, sometimes, I tried to show him my pictures. One day, he told me: “Pictures are good, but if you want to become a professional, you will need a digital camera!” So, I bought my first digital camera, a Canon EOS 50D. In 2011, the WRC Academy was created to promote young talents. Reinhard and Colin decided to send me on the rallies where the academy was competing, to help them with the pictures. That’s how I became part of the McKlein Photography team, and since that time, I enjoy every rally I’m snapping for them.”

You are very young too, is it an advantage in your business??

“I don’t know if it’s good or not. Maybe it’s good because we come with young eyes, and new ideas, etc. But sometimes it’s not easy, because people don’t hear what you say. They don’t take you seriously. But ok, that’s life. I’m one of the youngest permanent photographers in WRC, so, I have to listen and learn as much as I can.”

You’re the first woman photographer interview, how is the competition with your male colleagues??

“I think there is no big competition between women and men. Well, I have no big competition with my colleagues. Maybe some of them don’t take me seriously because I’m a woman, but I don’t think that it’s the case. I think that the people in WRC are not sexist. It’s not easy to get in the WRC, so I think everybody respect each other, men and women. The only problems I have, sometimes, it is with the marshals who think I don’t know my job because I’m a woman. But it’s rare.”

What’s your target when you are shooting?? What do you want transmit in you photos??

“My first target is, of course, to make the best pictures. But I also try to show how much I like rallying in my pictures. This sport is just so great! So, every time I go to a rally, I have one big target: I want to show all the aspects of rallying. I want to show the cars in action, but also the great landscapes, the service, the drivers and co-drivers, and also the other people, like the mechanics. I also like shooting little details, like a destroyed tyre…etc.”

Do you prefer static or panning photos??Why??
Preferisci foto statiche o in panning??Perchè??

“I like both of them, but maybe I’m using more static shots. Pan shots are more risky. I mean, you have more risks to have pictures out of focus. So, normally, on the first day of a rally, I’m not doing pan shots, because my team need to have pictures in focus for our clients. After, once I’ve done good pictures, in focus, I can get a little bit more “crazy” and shoot at 1/30s. It depends on the stages and how I feel.”

Who is your best rally photographer ever??

“The first pictures I saw where the McKlein pictures. So, they have always been a big inspiration for me. I always wanted to make pictures as good as their pictures, and now I’m part of their team! So I am very happy and thankful for that. I also have big respect and admiration for the works of Daniel Roeseler, François Baudin and Pascal Huit. They have different styles, and they inspire me very much. And I also look at all the pictures of my facebook contacts. Some are really great and inspire me for the future rallies.”

What do you think about post production in the rally photos??

“This is a difficult question. During a lot of time, I thought that a picture should not be changed. Only the basic changes, like contrast. It was and it is still what the magazines need. Anyway, we don’t have a lot of time to work on the pictures in the evening, when we are back at the press office. So, most of the pictures don’t have a lot of post-production, only the basic corrections. But, at the end of a rally, I like to take a selection of pictures and try to work more on them (especially in black & white). I think that it is part of what the people on the social medias want to see. And in our “instant” world, if you don’t follow the trends, you become old very quickly, and no one want your pictures anymore. But we have to be careful with how we “process” a picture. A bad picture will never become a piece of art after hours of post-production. The pictures have to be processed carefully and with taste.”

What is you favourite rally in the world and why??

“I love Rally Argentina! You often have fog or rainy days during the rally, but the landscapes are so great! And if you have sun, it becomes one of the nicest places in the world. The spectators are great, the meat is incredibly good, so everything is perfect! … As long as no one steal you cameras. That’s the risk, but it can also happen in a lot of other countries.”

Which is the best driver to immortalize in action??

“For sure Evgeny Novikov! If there is a jump, you can be sure that he will be the one jumping the fastest! But you’ve got to be careful when he comes. He is a bit… wild! He almost destroyed my 16-35mm with a big slide in Argentina. Luckily, I had a filter on it .Advise: always put filters on your lenses!”

Consiglio: mettere sempre i filtri sulle vostre lenti “

What do you think about Wrc and Erc they are better today or not??

“I think that both series are great. Rallying is great! Rallying has everything to be popular. It was one of the most popular sports in the 1980s, far ahead of Formula One! I wish it become popular again, and that people behind their TV can look at rally reports, and say: that’s cool!”

What do you think about Italian rallies and Italian fans??
Cosa pensi dei rally italiani e dei suoi tifosi??

“This year will be my third Sardinia Rally, but I also was at the Sanremo, and also at the first Tuscan Rewind (great one, with wonderful landscapes!), and I came to RallyLegend two or three times. Italy is a great country with a big culture and history of rallying. And Italy has, with Argentina, the best rally fans! Ok, sometimes, Italian rally fans are a little bit too crazy. But it’s always great to come in your country.”
