Fotografi da rally – Intervista a Nikos Katikis

Eccoci arrivati alla 7° uscita della serie “Fotografi da Rally” per l’occasione abbiamo momentaneamente abbandonato la patria per spostarci poco lontano in Grecia per intervistare un giovane fofotgrafo (33 anni) Nikos Katikis.

Nikos vanta già diverse collaborazioni non che negli ultimi anni come fototgrafo in proprio vantando scatti tra gli altri lavori per il sito ufficiale del Wrc.

When you start to shoot?? Why??
Quando hai iniziato a scattare ?? Perchè??

“I started shooting in 1990 at the age of 10! It was then, when my father allowed me to use a Regula Picca CB from 1973 for the first time! Of course it was in a rally, the famous rally Chalkidiki. My passion for rallys, that I had from a very early age, made me want to keep those moments forever, not just in my mind, but printed on paper!”

“Ho iniziato a scattare nel 1990, all’età di 10 anni! Fu allora, quando mio padre mi ha permesso di utilizzare un Regula Picca CB dal 1973, per la prima volta! Certo che era in un rally, il famoso raduno Chalkidiki. La mia passione per i rallys, che ho avuto fin da un’età molto precoce, mi ha fatto venire voglia ricordare per sempre quei momenti, non solo nella mia mente, ma stampato su carta! “

Who has teach you how to do good images??
Chi ti ha insegnato a realizzare buone immagini??

“Iʼve never studied photography nor ever attended any photography seminar or course. Neither had ever known someone to teach me, even the basics of photography! My observation and my persistence made me want to continuously improve the photos I took. All this while I was still a child … Later in the era of internet, it was much easier for me to get in touch with any information about photography. I could say that I learned finally shooting, while observing thousands of photos of other photographers to the internet, and trying to “guess” how these photos could have been shooted!”

“Non ho mai studiato fotografia né mai frequentato alcun seminario di fotografia o corso. Non ho mai conosciuto qualcuno che avesse potuto insegnarmi, anche le basi della fotografia! La mia osservazione e la mia perseveranza mi spingeva a migliorare continuamente le foto che facevo. Tutto questo mentre ero ancora un bambino … Più tardi nell’era di internet, fu molto più facile per me arrivare in contatto con tutte le informazioni sulla fotografia. Potrei dire che ho imparato finalmente a scattare, osservando migliaia di foto di altri fotografi attraverso internet, e cercando di “indovinare” come queste foto potessero essere state scattate! “

When you have realized that could become your future job??
Quando hai realizzato che poteva diventare il tuo lavoro futuro??

“Not even now … ;) The truth is that, from 2009 onwards, I decided to involve a little more seriously, with the hobby I had until then, and even more seriously in the last two years. Of course I donʼt know if I can describe my involvement with photography as a job, nor to think of something like that for the foreseeable future, because until now my main profession is to be an architect … Probably not for long though … ;) But for sure, my target is to become an absolutely professional motorsport photographer in the near future!”

“Nemmeno ora … La verità è che, a partire dal 2009, ho deciso diventare un po ‘più sul serio, con l’hobby che avevo fino ad allora, e ancor più seriamente negli ultimi due anni. Certo io non so se posso descrivere il mio coinvolgimento con la fotografia come un posto di lavoro, né di pensare a qualcosa di simile per il prossimo futuro, perché fino ad ora la mia professione principale è quella di essere un architetto … Probabilmente per molto però …Ma per certo, il mio obiettivo è quello di diventare un fotografo di motorsport assolutamente professionale in un prossimo futuro! “

“As I said before, my main profession is architect from 2005 until today. At the same time as a motorsport photographer from 2009 onwards, I managed to have some customers, mainly in Greece, but the last two years in WRC as well. I hope in the future to have some more! Also as a photographer, I cooperate with some sites and some car magazines in Greece and beyond. The truth is that I’m still trying to find a way to become more involved in the world of WRC, knowing people and achieving partnerships. But mostly I try taking photos that people like to see!”

“Come ho detto prima, la mia professione principale è architetto dal 2005 fino ad oggi. Allo stesso tempo, come fotografo motorsport dal 2009 in poi, sono riuscito ad avere alcuni clienti, soprattutto in Grecia, ma negli ultimi due anni pure nel WRC. Spero in futuro di avere un po ‘di più! Anche come fotografo, collaboro con alcuni siti e alcune riviste di auto in Grecia e oltre. La verità è che sto ancora cercando di trovare un modo per diventare più coinvolto nel mondo del WRC , conoscere gente e di raggiungere partnership, ma soprattutto cerco di realizzare foto che alla gente piace vedere! “

What’s the relationship with the other photographers…hostility or cooperation??
Com’è il rapporto con gli altri fotografi…ostilità o cooperazione??

“Absolutely no hostility! I have some really good friends (which are increasing) out there. For me, photography is mainly passion and fun! Thus hostilities do not fit. And really I have no problem in any sort of cooperation with other photographers. Indeed I usually seek cooperation and offer it with joy when someone asks from me!”

“Assolutamente no ostilità! Ho alcuni davvero buoni amici (che sono in aumento) là fuori. Per me la fotografia è soprattutto passione e divertimento! Così le ostilità non nascono. E davvero non ho alcun problema in qualsiasi tipo di collaborazione con altri fotografi. Infatti io di solito cerco di cooperazione e la offro con gioia quando qualcuno chiede di me! “

What’s your target when you are shooting?? What do you want transmit in you photos??
Qul’è il tuo obiettivo quando scatti??Cosa vuoi trasmettere nelle tue foto??

“Mainly what ever tried to do with my photos is to convey to them, the general atmosphere of the rally. For me rallies are not just a racing car that turns or jumps, but also the spectators who attend, the cries of admiration that might sound around, the beauty of nature during the scene… Generally I try with my photos, to excite not only the sense of sight, but also to make the people who will see them, to hear, to smell, to feel the atmosphere and feel like they are living there and watching.”

“La cosa che soprattutto ho sempre cercato di fare con le mie foto è quello di trasmettere in loro l’atmosfera generale del rally. Per me i rally non sono solo una macchina da corsa che gira o salti, ma anche gli spettatori che frequentano, le grida di ammirazione che potrebbe risuonare intorno, la bellezza della natura durante la scena … in genere cerco con le mie foto, di emozionare non solo il senso della vista, ma anche far si che le persone che le vedranno, possano ascoltare, annusare, sentire l’atmosfera e sentire come stessero videndo ciò che stanno guardando “

Do you prefer static or panning photos??Why??
Preferisci foto statiche o in panning??Perchè??

“Definitely Ι prefer more action shots. It is not necessary to be panning, but generally the use of slow shutter speeds when photographing moving cars, it gives you an opportunity to record their movement easier! And in my opinion this should be the main aim of a motorsport photographer. Quite often I also like to put my subject (rally cars) in a general landscape frame. There certainly I am using more landscape photography techniques!”

“Sicuramente preferiscono più foto d’azione. Non è necessario che siano in panning, ma in generale l’utilizzo di tempi di posa lunghi per fotografare auto in movimento, ti dà la possibilità di registrare più facile il loro movimento! E a mio parere questo dovrebbe essere l’obiettivo principale di un fotografo motorsport. Molto spesso mi piace anche mettere il mio soggetto (auto da rally), in una cornice paesaggistica generale. Certamente utilizzero maggiori tecniche di fotografia di paesaggio! “

Who is your best rally photographer ever??
Chi è per te il miglior fotografo di sempre??

“The time I came in contact with work of other photographers, is mainly in the last 10 years. So maybe I can not include in my selection oldest photographers … Hoping not to blame others, I will say three names … Petr Lusk, Francois Flamand, Marcin Rybak …”

What’s your equipment??
Com’è costituito il tuo equipaggiamento??

“I am on the side of CANON … I use EOS7D bodies with lenses CANON 70-200 f/4L, 24-105 f/4L, Sigma 10-20 f/4-5, 6 and a Samyang 8mm fisheye.”

What do you think about post production in the rally photos??
Cosa pensi della postproduzione nelle foto di rally??

“Hmm itʼs a big question… A few years ago I would say definitely different! Today, however, I believe that the digital processing and the opportunities it gives you, make more and more necessary their use … I continue to believe, however, that a bad photo, can not become good at PC … In contrast, a good photo could stay forever in the minds of those who see it, when a good and proper editing is done! Generally in terms of my own work, I try to use as more creatively as possible the post production without altering the original composition of the picture, which seeks to be always as close as possible to what I have in mind when I am shooting!”

“Hmm sua una grande domanda … Qualche anno fa, avrei risposto decisamente! Oggi, però, credo che l’elaborazione digitale e le opportunità che esso offre, rendono sempre più necessario il loro utilizzo … Io continuo a credere , tuttavia, che una brutta foto, non può diventare bella al PC … al contrario, una buona foto potrebbe rimanere per sempre nella mente di coloro che la vedono, quando un buon e corretto editing è stato fatto! What is you favourite rally in the world and why??
Qual’è il tuo rally preferito al mondo e perchè??

“I love very much the gravel and dusty rallies. These, however, are not likeable to my camera … :) Do not misjudge me, but I think that Acropolis Rally is the best, most impressive and most unpredictable rally in WRC. Of course I like the Finnish jumps too…”

“Io amo molto i rally su terra e polverosi. Questi, tuttavia, non sono simpatici alla mia macchina fotografica … Non mi giudicare male, ma credo che l’Acropolis Rally è il Rally migliore, più imponente e più imprevedibile nel WRC. Certo che mi piacciono troppo i salti finlandesi … “

“For sure Petter Solberg was until his retirement! Now I think that Latvala is quite communicative and friendly with the fans!”

Which is the best driver to immortalize in action??
Chi è il pilota migliore da immortalare nell’azione??

“Colin McRae was for sure the best and most spectacular rally driver Iʼve ever seen live! In modern rallying I believe that JM Latvala could be memorable in the next years for his driving style!”

“Colin McRae è stato di sicuro il migliore e più spettacolare pilota di rally che ho visto dal vivo ! Nel rally moderno credo che JM Latvala potrebbe essere ricordato nei prossimi anni per il suo stile di guida!”

What do you think about Wrc and Erc they are better today or not??
Cosa pensi del Wrc e dell’Erc sono meglio oggi o no??

“WRC is certainly not better in terms of entries than the past years. But current WRCars I think are quite more spectacular than older ones. For sure in this comparison we canʼt include Group B cars…But I believe that WRC will lose much of its glamor, if rumors prove true for cutting classic rallies, for the sake of new markets for automakers. ERC I think that follows the right way. Itʼs quite competitive and spectacular! But by now, not with the best level on his entries!”

“WRC non è certamente migliore in termini di iscrizioni rispetto agli anni passati. Però le WRCars attuali penso siano molto più spettacolari di quelle più vecchie. Sicuramente in questo confronto non possiamo includere le vetture Gruppo B … Ma credo che il WRC acquisterà molto fascino, se le voci si rivelassero vere per il taglio rally classici, per il bene di nuovi mercati per le case automobilistiche. L’ERC penso che stia seguendo la strada giusta. E’ abbastanza competitivo e spettacolare! Ma ormai, non al miglior livello come iscritti! “

What do you think about Italian rallies and Italian fans??
Cosa pensi dei rally italiani e dei suoi tifosi??

“The Italian fans are very similar to the Greek ones. Are enthusiastic and appreciative, but also difficult to control them during a special stage … Italy has a long tradition in motorsports. So organizes amazing rallies, even locally.”

“I tifosi italiani sono molto simili a quelli greci. Sono entusiasti e riconoscenti, ma anche difficili da controllare nel corso di una prova speciale … l’Italia ha una lunga tradizione nel motorsport. Così organizza raduni sorprendenti, anche a livello locale.”
