Fotografi da Rally – Intervista a Willem Wittenberg

Per la 5° uscita della serie ” Fotografi da Rally “ vi presento un’altro fotografo da molti anni nel Wrc ; Willem Wittenberg è originario dell’olanda non che fotografo per l’agenzia RSSP Rallysport Stockphoto .

When you start to shoot?? Why??
Quando hai iniziato a scattare??Perchè??

“Watching Rally sport was a big hobby of my, just like photography (1+1=2). My first attempt to shoot rally cars was back in 1985, nothing digital, no auto-focus or light measurements, just make your choices and click. Always exciting to pick up the printed photos after two days.”

“Guardare i rally era un mio hobby come anche la fotografia (1+1=2).Il mio primo tentativo di fare foto ai rally è satato nel 1985, niente digitale, senza auto-focus o misura della luce, solo scegliere e cliccare. Sempre emozionante portare a casa le foto stampate dopo due giorni. “

Who has teach you how to do good images??
Chi ti ha insegnato a realizzare belle immagini??

“Actually nobody, in the beginning you look in magazines how “they” do it and you try to copy that. Later on you develop your own style. Still looking in magazines for different styles by the way, never too old to learn!”

“In realtà nessuno, in principio si guarda in riviste per vedere come fanno ” loro “e si tenta di copiare da ciò. Successivamente si sviluppa il proprio stile. Continuo a guardare le riviste per conoscere i diversi stili , non si è mai troppo vecchi per imparare!”

When you have realized that could become your future job??
Quando hai realizzato che poteva diventare il tuo lavoro futuro??

“Photography was my work for some Dutch Lady magazines and watching rally sport was my hobby, somehow those two came together after a few years and drivers asked for my work. First only the Dutch National Championship, later on the WRC.”

“La fotografia è stato il mio lavoro per alcune riviste olandesi da signora e guardare i rally era il mio passatempo, in qualche modo le due cose si sono unite e dopo alcuni anni alcuni equipaggi hanno chiesto per avere le mie foto. Prima solo il Campionato Nazionale olandese, in seguito nel WRC”.

” That’s going to be a long story, will try to keep it short . I started my life of photography of course on a school for photography and graphic design. After this I worked for a major Dutch publisher, first graphic design and later on as a photographer, outdoors and studio! I was living in the east of the Netherlands and my work was in Amsterdam, about 130 Km travelling up and down every day took longer and longer till it reach a point where I thought “If I have to make this kind of hours every week I can start my own business”. So I did in 1995 and have no regrets since. Now almost 20 years later I do a lot of work in and for the rally sport. Besides the WRC photography I also do studio photography for a couple of rally related factories, building websites, designing logos and take care of their printing matters. But it’s not all rally sport, I also work for a lot of local (regional) customers (photography, websites and printing) and for a Dental Magazine. So no time to get lazy .”

“Sarà una lunga storia, cercherò di renderla breve. Ho iniziato la mia attività fotografica ovviamente in una scuola di fotografia e graphic design. Dopo questo ho lavorato per un grande editore olandese, prima progettista grafico e successivamente come fotografo, all’aperto e in studio! Vivevo nella parte orientale dei Paesi Bassi ed il mio lavoro era ad Amsterdam, a circa 130 km viaggiando su e giù ogni giorno e la cosa continuava a diventare sempre più pesante così ad un certo punto mi sono detto “se ho tutto questo lavoro da fare potrei mettermi in proprio “. Così ho fatto nel 1995 e non ho rimpianti da allora. Ora quasi 20 anni dopo, faccio un sacco di lavori per i rally. Oltre al WRC ho anche uno studio fotografico per un paio di fabbriche legate al mondo del rally, costruisco siti web, progetto loghi e seguo le loro questioni di stampa. Ma non è tutto rally, lavoro anche per clienti locali (fotografia, siti web e stampa ) e per una rivista (Dental Magazine). Quindi non c’è tempo per diventare pigri “.

What’s your target when you are shooting?? What do you want transmit in you photos??
Qual’è il tuo obiettivo quando scatti??Cosa vuoi trasmettere nelle tue foto??

“It’s always a mixture of things, when I shoot one of our customer cars I want to see the sponsors on the car clearly to make them happy also, if it’s for a magazine you want more action and speed and you need some “wide view photos” so the publisher has the possibility to enter text besides it. You have to see in which country you are, that’s one target I always have, so not to much close-up’s from cars, you can make these everywhere.”

“E ‘sempre un misto di cose, quando scatto per un preparatore di macchine quest’ultimo vuole vedere gli sponsor sulla macchina in modo chiaro per renderli felici , se è per una rivista si vuole più azione e la velocità e avete bisogno di qualche “visione ampia ” così l’editore ha la possibilità di inserire il testo in essa. Bisogna vedere in quale paese tu sia, questo è un obiettivo che ho sempre avuto, non fare foto troppo in primo piano perchè è possibile effettuare queste foto ovunque”.

Do you prefer static or panning photos??Why??
Preferisci foto statiche o in panning??Perchè??

“I prefer both, like I said in the previous question you’ll need a lot of different shots for different reasons. And if you’re on a stage it’s always nice to have a look for the possibilities you have, one car static, the next one in a panning shot, front shot, back shot, different shutter speeds, etc., etc.”

“Io preferisco entrambi, come ho detto nella domanda precedente si ha bisogno di un sacco scatti diversi per motivi diversi. E se sei in prova è sempre bello dare uno sguardo per vedere le varie possibilità che hai, una macchina statica, la prossima panning, frontale, posteriore, diversi tempi di posa, ecc, ecc “

Who is your best rally photographer ever??
Chi è per te il miglior fotografo di sempre??

“No doubt, Daniel Roeseler, I travelled a lot with him the last few years and learned a lot from him, business and photographer wise.”

“Senza dubbio, Daniel Roeseler, ho viaggiato molto con lui negli ultimi anni e ho imparato molto da lui, un’ uomo d’affari e saggio fotografo “.

What’s your equipment??
Qual’è il tuo equipaggiamento??

“In the analogue area I always used Olympus cameras, started with the OM2 and finally the OM4-Ti which was a great camera! Since things are digital I use Nikon, first one was the D70, then the D200, D300 and now the D3S, super camera also! Lenses I have the Nikor 70-200, 16-35, 17-55 a Sigma 10, 2 Nikon Flashes and a set a Pocket Wizard triggers and a lot of small stuff.”

“Nel settore analogica ho sempre usato fotocamere Olympus, ho iniziato con la OM2 ed infine la OM4-Ti, che era una grande macchina fotografica! Dal momento che sono diventate digitali uso Nikon, prima usavo la D70, poi la D200, D300 e ora la D3S, una super fotocamera! Come lenti ho il Nikor 70-200, 16-35, 17-55 un Sigma 10, 2 flash Nikon e un set di un Pocket Wizard triggers e un sacco di piccole cose. “

What do you think about post production in the rally photos??
Cosa pensi della post produzione nelle fotografie di rally??

“I think you’ll have to, just for a personal touch. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not manipulating photos, just add colour, sharpness and extra detailing by making things brighter or darker or cropping/rotating the photo just a little bit. Only when something is really in the way I remove it from the photo.”

“Penso che servirebbe, solo per un tocco personale. Non fraintendetemi, non manipolo le foto, solo aggiungo colore, nitidezza e dettagli aggiuntivi, rendendo le cose più chiare o più scure , ritagliate / ruotare la foto appena un po ‘. Solo quando qualcosa è veramente in mezzo la tolgo dalla foto. “

What’s the relationship with the other photographers…hostility or cooperation??
Com’è il rapporto con gli altri fotografi….ostilità o cooperazione??

“No hostility, we all have a job to do, so why not cooperate? Off course you always have moment when you think “WHY….??” But do we not also have this in normal life, at home?”

“Non ostilità, tutti noi abbiamo un lavoro da fare, quindi perché non collaborare? Ovviamente sempre si ha un momento in cui si pensa” perché ….?? “Ma questa domanda non la abbiamo anche nella vita reale a casa?”

How is change your business in the years ??
Com’è cambiato il lavoro negli anni??

“Like in the rest of the world it’s hard to find money, prices are going down, not so many drivers anymore and a lot of spectators with cameras on the stages. Think we have to life with that, just do our job and make sure that our pictures are better “

“Come nel resto del mondo, è difficile trovare il denaro, i prezzi sono in discesa, non così tanti piloti ed un sacco di spettatori con telecamere sulle prove. Penso che dobbiamo convivere con questo, basta fare il nostro lavoro ed assicurarsi che che le nostre immagini siano migliori “

What is your favourite rally in the world and why??
Qual è il tuo rally preferito al mondo e perchè??

“Absolutely Greece! Everything there is perfect for us, the rough surface, the landscapes, the dust trails, the weather, the food, the….”

“Assolutamente Grecia! Tutto è perfetto per noi, la superficie ruvida, i paesaggi, le scie di polvere, il clima, il cibo, il ….”

Which is the more sociable rally driver??
Chi è il pilota più socievole ??

“For me Jari-Matti Latvala, always in for a talk and super friendly!”

“Di sicuro Jari-Matti Latvala, sempre disponibile a parlare e super amichevole!”

Which is the best driver to immortalize in action??
Chi è il miglior pilota da immortalare nell’azione??

“Well we have a few of these, Novikov and Nasser are always spectacular, and everybody who drives on the limit, so most of the time the factory boys.”

“Bene ne abbiamo alcuni di questi, Novikov e Nasser sono sempre spettacolari , tutti quelli che guidano al limite , quindi il più delle volte i piloti ufficiali.”

What do you think about Wrc and Erc they are better today or not??

“I like WRC far more than ERC, although I must admit that with the new R5 cars the ERC can also become very interesting. Better or worse, I don’t know, things are different, times are changing, you have to adjust or quit, simple as that.”

“Mi piace di gran lunga il Wrc rispetto l’ERC, sebbene devo ammettere che con le nuove R5 l’Erc può diventare molto interessante. Meglio o peggio , non lo so , sono diversi , i tempi sono cambiati , si deve aggiornare o uscire , semplicemnte così .”

What do you think about Italian rallies and Italian fans??
Cosa pensi dei rally italiani e dei suoi tifosi??

“The WRC round of Italy is definitely number two on my list, love the Sardinian round which this year was maybe the last we have seen? What will be next? San Remo or Tuscany?”

“L’appuntamento italiano del Wrc è assolutamente il numero 2 nella mia lista , amo l’evento in Sardegna ma probabilmente quest’anno sarà l’ultimo visto?? Cosa ci sarà dopo?? San Remo o Toscana ??”
