Per la 10° usicta della serie ” Fotografi da rally “ abbiamo intervistato un fotografo di grande esperienza e fama internazionale Francois Baudin fotografo professionista che scatta per DPPI Media.

When you start to shoot?? Why??
Quando hai iniziato a scattare??Perchè??

“I started really to shoot rally in 1984, before I was driving in rally in France and I had always a camera with me because I was professional photographer. When I stopped to drive I have continue to go on rally with my camera. When I was young all my friends wanted to be cops or fireman, my dream was to be photographer in 24 Hours of le Mans !”

“Ho iniziato a scattare ad un rally nel 1984, prima ero pilota nei rally in Francia ma portavo sempre con me una macchina fotografica perché ero già fotografo professionista. Quando ho smesso di guidare ho continuato ad andare a vedere rally con la mia macchina fotografica. Quando era giovane, tutti i miei amici volevano essere poliziotti o vigili del fuoco, il mio sogno era di diventare fotografo della 24 ore di Le Mans! “

Who has teach you how to do good images??
Chi ti ha insegnato a realizzare buone immagini??

“I have learned photography alone. I have done many mistakes but I learned everything about photography. During holidays I have offered my services at some photographers and this given me experience. Then I had several different jobs in photography. I have meet several good teachers during my way to began a professional career I had the chance to work with some great professionals, specially in portrait and in advertising pictures.”

“Ho imparato a fotografare da solo. Ho fatto molti errori ma ho imparato tutto sulla fotografia. Durante le vacanze ho offerto i miei servizi presso alcuni fotografi e questo mi ha dato esperienza. Poi ho avuto lavori diversi in fotografia. Ho incontrato molti buoni insegnanti durante il mio inzio di carriera professionale ed ho avuto la possibilità di lavorare con alcuni grandi professionisti, specialmente in ritrattistica e in immagini pubblicitarie “.

“I was already professional photographer and I was really motivated to be rally photographer, I send my pictures to magazines as Echappement, Auto-Hebdo and Sport-Auto they published my images, then I offer to Citroen to cover French rallies . That was really the start of my professional career .”

“As written above I started with magazines in 1985 and I join Sipa in 1987 for 2 years when they created Sipa-Sport. Then I received one good offer from DPPI in 1989. I cover 5 Paris-Dakar, about 50 F1 GP and more than 300 Rallies. I created a press agency in 2004 : Austral and I represent DPPI Media on rallies.”

What’s the relationship with the other photographers…hostility or cooperation??

“Many of my colleagues have all my respect. And we have good relations between us. It is not rare that we help us during rallies. This work is hard, it is not easy to do your best when the weather conditions are bad or when you drive long time, or when you work late after the day.”

“Molti dei miei colleghi hanno tutto il mio rispetto. Ed abbiamo buoni rapporti tra di noi. Non è raro che ci aiutiamo durante i raduni. What’s your target when you are shooting?? What do you want transmit in you photos??

“Rally is a nice sport, my preferred. This sport is great to show in photo. I want to show emotion to the people who have not chance to see rally. I like also to try to shoot different pictures. This work is perfect to have great opportunity to create new images. A report in rally is also a part of improvisation.”

“Il Rally è un sport bello , il mio preferito. Questo sport ottimo per mostrarlo in foto. Voglio mostrare le emozioni per le persone che non hanno la possibilità di vedere rally. Mi piace anche provare a scattare diverse tipologie di immagini. Questo lavoro è perfetto perchè di consente una grande opportunità di creare nuove immagini. In un report di rally c’è anche una parte di improvvisazione. “

Do you prefer static or panning photos??Why??
Preferisci foto statiche o in panning??Perchè??

“I like to produce one complete report at the end of the rally. I try to take ambiance picture and also portraits. I enjoy action pictures, specially when you see the landscape, the country. It is nice to show the difference between each rally. I like also show the action in the pictures. Actually I work on a new technology to show action.”

“Mi piace produrre un report completo alla fine del rally. Cerco di scattare foto di atmosfera e anche ritratti. Mi piacciono le immagini d’azione, specialmente quando si vede il paesaggio, il paese. Who is your best rally photographer ever??

“Good question… Ask to Sebastien Loeb or Sebastien Ogier who is the best rally driver… Hihi !!! If one day I see that I’m not at the top anymore, then I’ll stop my work…But actually… I have no complex…
I do recognize talent on some photographers as Reinhard Klein a legend, Pascal Huit, very constant in quality, but also new talents are arriving , as Sarah Vessely with a real touch of art and my son Bastien creative with new technology. as 3D , 360°X 180° photo.”

“Canon EOS1DX , EOS 5markIII , all the best new Canon Serie L lenses : From 8-15 mm to 500 mm and a lot of accessories; remote radio, 360° head, carbon tripod. As I work also in different way that rally as archi, portrait I have some fantastic lens that I use in rally : 1,4/24 mm , 24mm TSE II , 1,2/85 mm.”

What do you think about post production in the rally photos??
Cosa pensi della post produzione nelle foto di rally??

“Until 2010 I was very strict about modification. I only worked the levels, the color balance on the rally pictures. My feeling was to respect the true of the scene. But at the request of some customers this year I started to use Lightroom and color effects. Each picture need a lot of time to work and a special reflexion to know if this is done in respect of art critters.”

“Fino al 2010 ero molto sciettico sulla manipolazione. Lavoravo solo sui livelli, il bilanciamento e del colore sulle immagini rally. La mia sensazione era quella di rispettare il vero della scena…Ma su richiesta di alcuni clienti quest’anno ho iniziato ad usare Lightroom e effetti di colore. Ogni immagine ho bisogno di un sacco di tempo per lavorare e una riflessione speciale nel sapere se si stà rispettando i criteri artistici . “

How is change you business in the years ??
Com’è cambiato il lavoro negli anni??

“I still continue to do my work as well as possible. I have new ideas and always the same passion for photo and rally. For me the more important is to offer to quality images… Not only facebook or Instagram style.”

What is you favourite rally in the world and why??

“I like Mexico, Argentina for the people , the atmosphere, New Zealand for the light… It depends of the rally each year is different.”

Which is the more sociable rally driver??

“All the rally drivers are very sociable and professional. This is also why I enjoy rally.”

Which is the best driver to immortalize in action??
Chi è il miglor pilota da immortalare nell’azione??

“The best rally drivers for photographers are not always the fastest… Sometimes they loose time in sideways… But we are so happy. We are photographers, we have no chrono…Meanwhile we can feel the difference with some drivers at full speed and this is a very good feeling…”

“I migliori piloti di rally per i fotografi non sono sempre i più veloci … A volte perdono tempo nelle sbandate … Ma siamo così felici. What do you think about Wrc and Erc they are better today or not??

“WRC event is the top. ERC is a good solution to start in rally.”

What do you think about Italian rallies and Italian fans??
Cosa pensi dei rally italiani e dei suoi tifosi??

“I like the feeling of a rally in Italy. I remember in the past San Remo rally in Tuscan, nothing was comparable… The light, atmosphere, the crowd, the food… Sardinia is nice also… I would like to come on some historic rallies in Italy.”

“Mi piace il feeling che c’è in un rally in Italia. Ricordo in passato il Rally di San Remo in toscana, niente era paragonabile … La luce, l’atmosfera, la gente, il cibo … in Sardegna è altrettanto bello … vorrei venire a qualche rally storico in Italia. “
