Il Rally Argentina vedrà gli equipaggi tornare su prove sterrate con strade morbide e sabbiose nelle vallate e con tappe più dure e rocciose nella parte sulle montagne. L’evento è popolare tra gli equipaggi e tra i fan, che conta circa un milione di spettatori che tifano per i loro eroi del WRC.
Hyundai Motorsport ha avuto molto supporto e successo negli ultimi anni, avendo vinto due gare consecutive in Argentina nel 2016 (Hayden Paddon) e nel 2017 (Thierry Neuville), ed un doppio podio nella scorsa stagione (Neuville secondo e Dani Sordo terzo).
La squadra si reca in Argentina dopo una vittoria al Tour de Corse alla fine di marzo, in cui Neuville e Nicolas Gilsoul hanno festeggiato nel finale di gara. Il risultato ha portato Hyundai Motorsport al vertice della classifica dei costruttori WRC con 114 punti, e dà a Neuville il vantaggio nella classifica piloti dopo 4 gare.
Il Rally d’Argentina vede tornare Andreas Mikkelsen insieme a Anders Jæger-Amland. Dani Sordo e Carlos del Barrio completeranno la formazione Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team. Con test vietati fuori dall’Europa, tutti e tre gli equipaggi hanno provato nel nord del Portogallo in preparazione per questo evento, così come il seguente round in Cile.
Il direttore del team, Andrea Adamo, ha dichiarato: “Siamo molto contenti di tornare in Sud America per la doppia trasferta in Argentina e Cile. Sarà un bel contrasto tra l’evento argentino ed il nuovissimo rally, che ci offrirà una serie di sfide. I nostri equipaggi sono motivati e determinati a mantenersi in prima linea, ma sappiamo che i nostri avversari spingeranno forte per essere davanti a tutti”.
Neuville / Gilsoul (# 11)
Il leader del campionato corre in Argentina dopo la vittoria nel Tour de Corse.
Vincitore del Rally Argentina nel 2017 e vice-campione nel 2018.
Neuville ha dichiarato: “Il Rally Argentina è un evento fantastico con alcune prove difficili ed una grande atmosfera. E’ uno dei rally più difficili della stagione, richiede un approccio attento. Da un lato, abbiamo bisogno di badare alla macchina, ma dall’altro ci sono alcune parti di prova speciale in cui puoi davvero attaccare. Dobbiamo trovare un buon ritmo ma anche essere pronti a spingere più o meno quando sarà necessario. Vorremmo aggiungere altre vittorie dopo il successo in Corsica, ma sappiamo che sarà un evento impegnativo, soprattutto partendo per primi”.
Mikkelsen / Jæger-Amland (# 89)
I norvegesi mirano a mostrare un buon ritmo della sullo sterrato.
Finito quinto in Argentina sulla Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC la scorsa stagione.
Mikkelsen ha dichiarato: “L’Argentina è senza dubbio uno dei miei rally preferiti su sterrato. Ci sono un gran numero di spettatori e fan appassionati, che creano un’atmosfera incredibile. Le tappe sono in condizioni davvero buone, un po’ sabbiose rispetto ad altri eventi sterrati. Ci sono anche delle classiche prove in Argentina, El Condor e Mina Clavero, che offrono la migliore prova sia dell’uomo che della macchina”.
Sordo / Del Barrio (# 6)
Gli spagnoli hanno ottenuto il loro miglior risultato della stagione in Corsica.
Ha conquistato il terzo posto in Argentina dodici mesi fa.
Sordo ha dichiarato: “Non vedo l’ora che arrivi il Rally Argentina, un evento speciale dove alcuni sostenitori sono davvero incredibili. Nonostante sia uno degli eventi più difficili del calendario, ci sono alcune prove molto belle – tra cui El Condor e Mina Clavero – che sono un vero privilegio da guidare. Abbiamo mostrato il nostro ritmo sullo sterrato in Messico, combattendo in prima posizione nel giorno d’apertura. Vogliamo ripetere quella prestazione in Argentina e fare tutto il possibile per ottenere un buon risultato per noi stessi e per la squadra”.
Il Rally Argentina comprende 18 prove speciali su una distanza di quasi 350 km.
Una super speciale d’apertura a Villa Carlos Paz si terrà il giovedì, prima di passare sugli sterrati veloci e sabbiosi della Valle Calamuchita il Venerdì. Un ciclo ripetuto di tre prove: Las Bajadas / Villa del Dique, Amboy / Yacanto, Santa Rosa / San Agustin.
Sabato ci si sposterà nella Punilla Valley con un trio di prove speciali: Tanti-Mataderos, Mataderos-Cuchilla Nevada e Cuchilla Nevada-Characato – verranno percorse due volte con la super speciale 6.04 km nel mezzo.
L’itinerario della domenica si spinge in alto nelle montagne di Traslasierra per le prove popolari e iconiche tra cui Copina-El Condor e Mina Clavero-Giulio Cesare. Una seconda manche attraverso El Condor fungerà da Power Stage per concludere il rally.

Hyundai Motorsport has its sights set on victory as the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) moves overseas to Argentina for the first of two consecutive events in South America.
Rally Argentina will see crews return to tough gravel stages with soft and sandy roads in the valleys contrasting with rockier, punishing stages high up in the mountains. The event is popular with crews and fans alike with around a million spectators lining the routes to cheer on their WRC heroes.
Hyundai Motorsport has enjoyed plenty of support and success in recent years, having taken back-to-back victories in Argentina in 2016 (Hayden Paddon) and 2017 (Thierry Neuville), as well as a double podium last season (Neuville second and Dani Sordo third).
The team heads to Argentina following a dramatic victory at Tour de Corse at the end of March, in which Neuville and co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul sealed a last-gasp win. The result has sent Hyundai Motorsport to the top of the WRC manufacturers’ standings on 114 points, and gives Neuville a slender lead in the drivers’ table after four rounds.
Rally Argentina sees Andreas Mikkelsen return to the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC alongside co-driver Anders Jæger-Amland. Dani Sordo and Carlos del Barrio will complete the three-crew Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team line-up. With testing prohibited outside of Europe, all three crews tested in the north of Portugal in preparation for this event – as well as the following round in Chile.
Team Director Andrea Adamo said: “We are very excited to return to South America for a double-header in Argentina and Chile. It will be a nice contrast of established event versus brand new rally, which will offer us a range of challenges. Our crews are motivated and determined to keep us at the front of the action, but we know our rivals will be pushing hard so we have to be on top of our game.”

Neuville said: “Rally Argentina is a fantastic event with some tough stages and a great atmosphere. As one of the roughest rallies of the season, it requires a careful approach. On the one hand, we need to look after the car but on the other there are some sections where you can really attack. It’s a balancing act; we have to find a good rhythm but also be ready to push more or less when necessary. We’d like to add more victories after the success in Corsica but we know it will be a demanding event, especially starting first on the road.”

Mikkelsen said: “Argentina is without doubt one of my favourite gravel rallies. There are a huge number of spectators and passionate fans, which creates an incredible atmosphere. The stages are in really nice condition, a little bit sandy compared to other gravel events that increases the grip level. As a result, we can set the car sideways into the corners and then push to the maximum. There are also the classic Argentina stages El Condor and Mina Clavero, which offer the ultimate test of man and machine.”

Sordo said: “I always look forward to Rally Argentina, a special event with some truly amazing supporters. Despite being one of the roughest events on the calendar, there are some very nice stages – including El Condor and Mina Clavero – that are a real privilege to drive. We showed our pace on gravel in Mexico, fighting at the front on the opening day. We want to repeat that level of performance in Argentina and do all we can to get a good result for ourselves and the team.”
About the rally
Rally Argentina consists of 18 special stages run over a distance of nearly 350km.
A shakedown and opening super special in Villa Carlos Paz gets the rally underway on Thursday before moving onto the fast and sandy gravel of Calamuchita Valley on Friday. A repeat loop of three stages – Las Bajadas/Villa del Dique, Amboy/Yacanto, Santa Rosa/San Agustin – will be split by a short lunchtime super special.
Saturday’s action centres in the Punilla Valley with a similar structure. A trio of stages – Tanti-Mataderos, Mataderos-Cuchilla Nevada and Cuchilla Nevada-Characato – will be run twice with the 6.04km super special in the middle.
Sunday’s itinerary ventures up high into the Traslasierra Mountains for popular and iconic tests including Copina-El Condor and Mina Clavero-Giulio Cesare. A second run through El Condor will act as the rally-concluding Power Stage.
